I am an Assistant Professor of Security Studies at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and Tufts University. My research focuses on nuclear weapons, arms control, deterrence, and the U.S.-China security relationship.
Previously, I was Assistant Professor in National Security Affairs at the U.S. Naval War College, Stanton Nuclear Security Pre-Doctoral Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Security Studies Program and a Fellow and Director of the Strategic Education Initiative at the Princeton University Center for International Security Studies. I completed my Ph.D. in Security Studies at the School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, where I also earned an M.A. and an M.P.A. I earned a B.A. in Political Science at Grinnell College.
My scholarly research has been published in International Security, Journal of Strategic Studies, The Nonproliferation Review, and Asian Security and with Georgetown University Press, Army War College Press, and National Defense University Press. I have also published policy analysis and commentary pieces in, among other venues, Foreign Affairs, Joint Force Quarterly, War On the Rocks, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, and China Brief.
I have conducted research for the Center for the Study of Chinese Military Affairs at National Defense University, and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and delivered briefings and presentations to the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, the Department of Defense, the Department of State, the Joint Staff, and other government agencies.
At Fletcher, I teach courses on U.S.-China Security Relations and Technological Innovation and International Security. At the U.S. Naval War College, I taught the International Security course in Theater Security Decisionmaking and National Security Decisionmaking. At Princeton, I helped teach courses in the International Relations of East Asia and Science and Global Security. I have also taught English at Northeastern University in Shenyang, China, and U.S. History at The Willow School in New Orleans.
I live outside Boston with my wife, where we enjoy cooking, hiking, rooting for the New Orleans Pelicans, and watching excessive amounts of TV.
